Insomniac Theater presents its first Shakespearian play, Macbeth, this September.
Considered to be William Shakespeare’s darkest tragedy, Macbeth deals with themes such as greed and lust for power. Macbeth is tempted by the prophesies of three witches that say he will be king of Scotland. Macbeth’s ambition for the throne drives him to madness with an unquenchable thirst for power. Murder and deceit lurk around every corner.
Director Ken Lamb imagines the play set after a modern civil war that’s been brought about by an economic collapse, a reimagining of Shakespeare that’s not been performed in the Ocala area before. He hopes to establish a connection between the play the audience’s fear of such an event occuring today.
“I’m trying to…make Macbeth take more responsibility for his actions,” Lamb said. “Also, I’m trying to show that none of the major characters are blameless for what happens to them.”
Each character’s decisions lead to more madness until Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are trapped by their own deeds. The play will make the audience question their ambition and think about the web of lies and deceit in which a person can become entrapped.
